Matt’s long race calling career started as a recipient of Sky Racings John Tapp scholarship for young race callers in 2000. he quickly established himself, becoming Sky’s Sydney lead race caller for over five years.

Matt’s career has included calling horse races in 16 countries, from the USA to UK, Argentina, Ireland, South Korea, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Mauritius and Dubai. Among the many international horse races covered, Matt has called seven Grand Nationals for BBC Radio and was the lead caller for the great race in 2018. Matt has broadcast the World famous Royal Ascot for Australian audiences on multiple occasions.

Back in Melbourne, Matt became the lead race caller for Racing.com when, in 2017, legendary commentator Greg Miles hung up his binoculars. He is the regular voice of the Melbourne Cup and calls a catalogue of other events including the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup, along with all of the autumn racing features. In a career highlight, in 2018, he was behind the microphone for Australian sporting history when the mighty mare Winx took home an astonishing fourth Cox Plate. In 2019, Matt was the winner of The Bert Wolfe Award for Broadcasting excellence.

BIGGEST GAME IN TOWN

Brought up in the sports capital idolising the likes of Bruce McAvaney, matt dreamed of calling Australia’s great game.

That dream became a reality when he called AFL for ABC Radio in 2015, culminating in a trip to Ireland to call International Rules for RTE Radio Ireland.

From 2021 Matt has been a regular caller on AFL Nation Australia wide, along with joining the Fox Footy commentary roster from 2024.

Matt has been a key member of Games Broadcast teams at 7 Olympics, Two Paralympics plus a Youth Olympics, Commonwealth Games and South East Asian Games.

He cites his broadcast of Mo Farah’s famous 5000 metre win in London as a lifelong highlight, along with being behind the microphone for the closest Men’s 100 final in history at Paris 2024.

Matt has broadcast a myriad of Olympic Sports including Track and Field, Equestrian, Rowing, Modern Pentathlon, Tennis, Short Track Speed Skating and Curling for Radio and television audiences.

Matt is based in Melbourne, where he is well recognised for skilled broadcast services within a small and loyal industry of professionals.

Matt is a familiar voice in a wide range of sports including Horse Racing, AFL , Athletics and Tennis.

Since 2012, Matt has taken to the courts as a commentator and presenter for the Australian Open Tennis. He has regularly broadcast major Athletics meets such as the Zatopek and Stawell Gift.

Highly regarded as an announcer and commentator, Matt has also worked on Equestrian and Boxing events heard on Fox Sports Australia, along with winter sports such as Alpine Skiing and Speed Skating.
